James Lenihan

James started playing rugby at Mount Saint Mary’s University (MD) in 1998. He then played men’s club rugby for Fredrick (MD), Doylestown (PA) and Monmouth (NJ) until the age of 35. James’ coaching career started in 2010 as he became the assistant coach for Monmouth Men’s Rugby and Christian Brothers Academy (NJ). In 2013, he helped coach Monmouth to an undefeated season and the national playoffs. That same year, CBA went undefeated and won their first 15s State Championship. From 2010 to 2016, James spent his summers building youth 7s in New Jersey and coaching the Monmouth U19 Girls and Boys. He has won three consecutive U16 boys New Jersey 7s state championships at CBA (2015, 2016, 2017).

In the summer of 2016, James sent Chris Ryan an email that completely changed his life. He was then invited as a volunteer coach for the Princeton Women’s Rugby 15s season, where he worked with with Chris, Emil and former USA Rugby player Phaidra Knight. James helped coach the Princeton 7s team to compete at nationals in spring 2017.

In the summer of 2017, James coached the NJ Blaze alongside Omar Rivera and the Morris Women’s 7s team alongside Tom Feury, both of who are coaches at Atlantis. In 2018, James was selected as the U16 boys Atlantis 7s coach. He also volunteers at Jersey Shore Youth Rugby as a flag rugby coach.
