This weekend, The Tigers had a B-Side game against The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). This was the first game for most of the fall term’s new rugby rookies! These rookies, and the team as a whole, persevered to a great victory over the opposing team!

 

First Half

TCNJ kicks off to start the half. Within the first two minutes sophomore rookie, Iliyah Coles is able to break through the defensive line to score the first try of the game for the Tigers. sophomore rookie, Kristen Ahner has a successful conversion. At the 14 minute mark, after the Tigers lose their lineout, TCNJ takes control of the ball again. However, the ball switches between Tiger and TCNJ control for the next several minutes. TCNJ is able to keep control of the ball long enough to score a try at the Tiger’s try line. TCNJ gains control of the ball after their kickoff to score another try six minutes later. Time is briefly called off due to injury for a TCNJ player. Once time starts back, at 36 minutes, Senior Ayanna Mathews breaks the defensive line to run more than 40 meters to score a try. Again, Ahner has a successful conversion. The half closes out with a score of 12-10.

Second Half

The Tigers kick off to start the half. Only a minute and a half into the second half, Mathews again breaks through the defense to score a try. Ahner is able to score a conversion. Co-captain Felicia Saravo scores another try for the Tigers only two minutes later. Ahner follows it with another successful try. For the next few minutes, the control of the ball switches between the two teams. However, once Tiger Co-captain Alexis Rysewyk received the ball from Coles, she effectively fights the defense to score the third try of the half for the Tigers. The score is 33-10. At the 18 minute mark, senior Mariah McVey enters the game for freshman rookie Kat Kennedy. Senior Katherine Leung enters the game for Maria Restrepo. For the next several minutes neither team gains an advantage as the ball switches between each team. At the 25 minute mark, Sarah Dillender enters the game for Felicia Saravo. Only, a few seconds later, Katherine Leung successfully fights against the defense for another Tiger try. Junior Coco Wallace then enters the game for Kristen Ahner and sophomore Ange Ndayishimiye enters the game for sophomore Martha Clark. For the next eight minutes, the Tigers successfully score five tries! The first is done by Erika Escalona near the defense’s try line. Sarah Dillender successfully kicks the conversion. The next four tries are done by Sarah Dillender (two), Coco Wallace, Mariah McVey. All conversions are also successful. Coco Wallace kicks the first two, and Sarah Dillender successfully kicks the last two. The successive tries of the Tigers in the last few minutes of the game bring the score to 73-10.
