Princeton was happy to host the local Yardley Makefield Rookie Rugby club whose members came out to watch our match against Penn on October 29.

The Yardley Makefield Rookie Rugby club is coached by Steven Severino, Nic Clapinson, as well as numerous other coaches including our own Shane Flynn.  Shane helped coach our Princeton men’s team from 2004-2011.  Shane’s children Nola and Brady are now both part of the Rookie Rugby program.

The Rookie Rugby program is set up into three groups: K/1st grade, 2/3rd grade and a 4th grade group. The program currently has around 80 children split evenly among the three groups.

This is the first year the YMRR club has been in existence.  The good news is that there are more parents and children finding out about the program and asking to join.  The current YMRRR growth plan is to build out the age groups each year.

Princeton Rugby also used the opportunity of the visit to donate some of our older equipment to YMRR club.  Princeton donated two tackle bags and 5 hit shields.

We all hope that YMRR program will serve as an example for starting other Rookie Rugby programs in and around the Princeton area.  As Rookie Rugby grows the base of young rugby players in our area, we hope Princeton High School, as well as other local high schools might support the development of rugby programs for both boys and girls at their institutions.
